The performance of a hydraulic breaker does not depend solely on its power, weight or compatibility with the excavator.
The type of tool fitted to the breaker directly influences how the impact energy is transferred to the material. Using an unsuitable tool can reduce penetration, slow down the work and cause unnecessary wear.
Choosing correctly between a moil point, chisel, pyramid point, blunt tool or asphalt cutter allows each impact to be used more effectively and adapts the breaking process to the work being carried out.
Manufacturers provide different working tools because materials do not all break in the same way. Some applications require penetration, while others require control over the fracture direction or the transmission of impact over a larger surface.
Why the tool must be adapted to the job
Some materials require all the impact energy to be concentrated on a small area to achieve penetration. In other cases, it is more effective to transmit vibrations and impact waves over a larger surface.
There are also applications where the fracture direction must be controlled, such as opening a trench, cutting pavement or demolishing a surface along a defined line.
Moil point
A versatile working tool
The moil point, also known as a conical point, concentrates the breaker's energy on a very small contact area.
Its shape promotes penetration and makes it a versatile option for general demolition, pavement, unreinforced concrete, rock and trenching work.
It is a suitable choice when the main objective is to create an initial breaking point and progressively penetrate the material without precisely controlling the direction of the fracture.
When should another tool be selected? On highly abrasive surfaces or very large blocks of extremely hard rock, a blunt tool may be more efficient because it distributes the impact over a larger contact area.

Flat chisel
For controlling the fracture direction
A chisel has a flat cutting edge that allows the fracture to be directed along a particular line. Instead of concentrating the impact on one point, it creates a defined line of attack.
This makes it suitable for cutting asphalt, opening trenches, breaking walls, working on reinforced concrete and separating layered materials.
Chisel orientation
To obtain an even fracture, the cutting edge should be positioned in the direction in which the break is intended to travel.
The condition of the edge should also be checked regularly. Uneven wear can make the tool harder to control and transmit lateral forces to the breaker.
Pressure should be applied in line with the breaker tool. The chisel must not be used as a lever after it has entered a crack.

Pyramid point
Penetration with greater control
A pyramid point concentrates the impact energy along several edges and helps create the initial opening in the material.
Its geometry combines penetration with fracture generation, making it suitable for concrete, compact rock, hard surfaces and general demolition work.
It can also be useful when a fully conical point tends to deflect or cannot initiate the break in a stable way.
Before fitting the tool, confirm that its diameter, total length, tolerances and retaining system correspond exactly to the hydraulic breaker model.
Blunt tool
Impact without penetration
A blunt tool has a wider contact surface. Rather than penetrating the material, it transmits mechanical waves and vibrations that promote internal fracturing.
It is particularly suitable for large rock blocks, very hard materials, crystalline or abrasive rock and secondary breaking in quarries.
When should it not be used?
It is generally not the best option when cutting, drilling or directing the fracture is required. Its larger contact area provides less penetration than a moil point or chisel.
A blunt tool breaks the material by impact and vibration rather than by direct penetration.
Asphalt cutter
Cleaner pavement cutting
A wide chisel or asphalt cutter can be used to remove pavement or open trenches in roads.
Its cutting edge creates a cleaner line and reduces unnecessary damage around the working area.
It should not be confused with a conventional chisel. The wider edge requires correct orientation and lateral movements must be avoided.

Common mistakes when selecting or using a tool
Always using the same tool
A moil point is versatile, but it is not the most productive option for every application. The tool should change when the material or breaking objective changes.
Working with the tool at an angle
The impact should travel along the tool axis. Angled operation creates lateral forces and can accelerate wear on the bushings, retainers and tool.
Using the tool as a lever
Breaker tools are designed for longitudinal impacts, not large lateral loads. They should not be used to separate or move material.
Hammering one point for too long
When the material does not break, reposition the tool. Remaining on one point for too long increases heat and wear without improving productivity.
Activating the breaker without support
The tool should be properly supported against the material before the breaker is activated to reduce blank firing and the risk of damage.
Installing an incompatible tool
Two visually similar tools may have different diameters, lengths, retaining systems, tolerances or upper striking surfaces.
